The United States Government will donate to Ecuador two million Pfizer vaccines to support the massive vaccination plan against covid-19 carried out by President Guillermo Lasso, informed on Tuesday the General Secretariat of Communication of the Presidency.

A first delivery of this volume will arrive in Ecuador this week, said the source, pointing out that it is a “direct donation” that highlights the “solid relations” between the two countries.

This donation is part of the efforts of President Joe Biden’s administration to support vaccination processes and put an end to the coronavirus pandemic around the world, he added.

The two governments issued a joint statement today announcing the donation of vaccines to support the vaccination plan of the Ecuadorian president, who has set out to immunize 9 million people (60 percent of the population) by early September.

“The United States has carried out a successful vaccination plan and Ecuador is replicating a similar process,” the statement noted.

“Together we did it, between the United States and Ecuador we will continue to build a safer and more secure world protected against the threat of infectious diseases,” the statement concluded.

The announcement came just hours after the Government of Ecuador reported that next July it would receive six million doses from the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac and another million in August.

The Minister of Health, Ximena Garzón, commented that a new phase of vaccination will start in July in order to reduce the community transmission of covid-19.

“We have enough doses to comply with the 9/100 plan”, she said in reference to President Lasso’s offer to vaccinate 9 million people in the first 100 days of his government, which began last May 24.

At the moment, vaccines from Pfizer, Sinovac and the British company AstraZeneca are being administered in Ecuador, while the arrival of doses already negotiated from the Chinese company CanSino is expected.

According to the latest epidemiological report of the Ministry of Public Health, Ecuador added 1,746 new cases of covid-19 infection in the last two hours and accumulated 457,489 cases during the pandemic, whose first record dates back to February 29, 2020.

The number of confirmed deaths from covid rose to 15,887 during the pandemic, in addition to 5,658 probable deaths from the disease, for a total of 21,545 deaths.
