Between 2016 and 2017 in Havana, the capital of Cuba, people began to talk about a strange disease known as Havana Syndrome, which mainly affected U.S. embassy officials. At first, they thought it was a location problem, but those affected were in different locations and presented the same symptoms—but what is exactly the Havana Syndrome?

El American editor Agustina Blanco and analyst Julio M. Shiling—who pointed out that more than half of those affected are intelligence officers, mainly members of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)—talked about it.

After investigations, they concluded that the cause of the problem could be very intense radiation waves. This year the syndrome reached Vienna. Last month, the U.S. government acknowledged that it is investigating a series of health incidents in the Austrian capital involving its diplomats and other administrative staff similar to what happened in 2016 and 2017 in Cuba.

“Officials at the U.S. and Canadian Embassies began complaining of noise, loud sounds, dizziness and cognitive problems. It is no secret that out of more than two hundred Americans affected, half are from the CIA,” Shiling said.

The most probable thesis about the Havana Syndrome

Likewise, he explained that the most probable thesis is that it is an espionage mechanism, in which an attempt is made at close range to extract information from electronic devices without them realizing what is happening.

The political analyst detailed that this was the reason why the Trump administration pulled several of its officials out of Cuba. On the other hand, he warned that “The most worrying thing is that this is an act of war.”

He also recalled that Vice President Kamala Harris was in Singapore and was going to Vietnam on an official trip, but they delayed the plane for two hours because they found that American officials from the embassy in Vietnam were presenting the symptoms.

“The problem is that this incapacitates the person for life. There has been no case of any person coming out well; we are talking about it causing permanent damage,” Shiling commented.

Finally, he stressed that the U.S. Government has not taken forceful action on the situation. For this reason, he insisted that they take into account that their embassy staff is being attacked, which represents a threat to the United States.

“This is very troubling and it is impressive how the administration has not responded to this which is a major threat. This is suspected to be Chinese or Russian technology, which was tested in Cuba,” he said.
