This Monday it was revealed that former President Donald Trump decided to sue CNN for defamation for more than 475 million dollars. The lawyers alleged that the media outlet labeled the Republican with a series of labels that do not represent him, such as “racist” or “lackey.”
“Beyond simply highlighting any negative information about Plaintiff and ignoring all positive information about him, CNN has sought to use its enormous influence, purportedly as a ‘trusted’ news source, to smear Plaintiff in the minds of its viewers and readers for the purpose of defeating him politically,” the lawsuit says.
The former president claims in the 29-page lawsuit that CNN had a long history of attacks against him, but that they have increased in recent months because of fears that he is running to be president of the United States again.
“As part of its concerted effort to tilt the political balance to the left, CNN has attempted to smear the plaintiff,” the lawyers wrote.
The lawsuit highlights the times commentators or guests attacked the Republican. For example, it laments that Adolf Hitler has been mentioned to criticize Donald Trump’s actions and shows several moments in which the late Nazi leader is referred to in order to talk about Trump. Among the people cited for having defamed the former president is singer Linda Ronstadt.
Also among the moments in which the former president was compared to dictators was a special report titled “The Fight to Save Democracy” by CNN anchor Fareed Zakaria, in a program that aired on January 9, 2022.
The document also announces that Trump’s lawyers informed the channel about the lawsuit in July and asked them to stop making defamatory comments about the former president. However, they denounced that CNN responded that it had not found any false or defamatory statements.
