This Wednesday, January 20th, Joe Biden will assume the Presidency of the United States in a ceremony considered the most atypical of the last decades.

Biden will become the 46th President of the United States in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) that conditioned his inauguration; and at the same time he will be one of the few leaders who will not receive the Presidency from his predecessor.

Biden will take the oath of office alongside his vice president, Kamala Harris, in an event that will not have the usual festive tone, especially given recent events in the country.

The inauguration will take place outdoors on the West front of the Capitol, as has traditionally been done in recent years. Biden will be sworn in at 12 p.m. and will become the nation’s president at that time.

Chief Justice John Roberts will swear in Biden; Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor will swear in Harris.

Limited seating

The 2021 inauguration will probably be remembered for its exceptionality; the main factor in this situation is the coronavirus pandemic, as the nation faces the third wave of the epidemic. All events have been limited and will not have the majesty of every occasion past.

The guest list will be significantly reduced to members of the House of Representatives and the Senate and other senior officials.

Historic military presence

This time there will be a historic level of military presence in Washington with the aim of preventing violence after a violent assault on the Capitol by supporters of now ex-President Trump which took place a few days ago.

In addition to the 25,000 National Guard troops from the 50 states and three territories that helped with security, personnel from the Maryland State Police, the Capitol Police, the New York Police Department and many other agencies were in town to keep all officials safe.

Where will Trump and Mike Pence Be?

Traditionally, sitting presidents meet with presidents-elect at the White House before traveling with them to the U.S. Capitol, however, this won’t be the case.

Trump left the White House this Wednesday morning without meeting with Biden before heading to Andrews Joint Base in Maryland for a modest event. He will then fly to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida and land before Biden’s swearing-in.

According to Fox News, the reason Trump is leaving so early “is that the plane he is landing in Florida is Air Force One, the name given to any plane the president is flying in. If Trump waited until Biden took office, the aircraft would be called the Air Force One Special Mission 28000.”

Meanwhile, Pence will participate in Biden’s inauguration ceremony along with a large number of members of Congress and other elected officials.

Who will attend?

Prior to the event, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif); Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY); Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.); and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, (R-Calif) will attend a service with Biden.

Former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton are expected to attend the inauguration in person. Many members of Congress will also be there, including Republicans who tried to block certification of Biden’s election victory.

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) will attend the official inauguration at the Capitol. Senators Roger Marshall (R-Kan), Josh Hawley (R-Mo), John Kennedy (R-La), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss), Rick Scott (R-Fl) and Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama), who questioned the election results, will also attend Biden’s inauguration.

Musicians Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Timberlake, Garth Brooks, Ant Clemons, Jon Bon Jovi, Foo Fighters, John Legend and Bruce Springsteen, among others, will participate in the opening or in a maximum audience event called “Celebrating America” hosted by Tom Hanks.

Lady Gaga will sing the national anthem.
