The Antifa and Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 were, to many, an alert about the threat of socialism in the United States. One of these people is John Mackey, the founder of Whole Foods, who recently warned that socialists “are taking control of society.” In turn, the businessman moderated his words and claimed he will have much more to say in a few months.

The Texan founded the company in 1980, with the aim of promoting healthy and organic foods, without preservatives or artificial coloring. More than 40 years later, it has 500 supermarkets in the U.S. and employs approximately 90,000 people around the world.

The socialist advance in the United States

“They’re marching through the institutions. They’re…taking over education. It looks like they’ve taken over a lot of the corporations. It looks like they’ve taken over the military. And it’s just continuing. You know, I’m a capitalist at heart, and I believe in liberty and capitalism. Those are my twin values. And I feel like, you know, with the way freedom of speech is today, the movement on gun control, a lot of the liberties that I’ve taken for granted most of my life, I think, are under threat,” the author of Conscious Capitalism told Reason.

In addition, Mackey criticized the federal government for the excess of unemployment checks, since, according to him, they created incentives for people not to work. “A lot of people were making as much money, if not more money, not working at all. And so guess what? They chose not to come back to work. They got used to it,” he argued.

Mackey also described one of the problems plaguing younger generations when it comes to working. Younger employees, he commented, don’t seem to want to unload trucks, stock shelves, or operate cash registers. “They don’t seem to want to work,” he said.

“They only wanna work if it’s really purposeful, and [something] they feel aligned to. You can’t hope to start with meaningful work. You’re going to have to earn it over time. Some of the younger generation doesn’t seem to be willing to pay that price, and I don’t know why,” the entrepreneur added.

The Whole Foods founder sold Amazon his company in 2017 for $13.7 billion. However, he still serves as CEO.

“Pretty soon, you’re gonna hear about ‘Crazy John’ who’s no longer muzzled. I’ve got six weeks. I can talk more about politics in six weeks than I can today,” Mackey concluded.
