Willie Colón, Latino music icon, is in serious but stable health condition after suffering a traffic accident last Tuesday, April 20.
According to information published today, Sunday, from Willie Colón’s own social media, the communications director of the company -El Malo Inc.–, Nell McCarty, detailed that “last Tuesday, April 20 at 4 p.m., music icon and social activist Willie Colón and his wife Julia, were involved in a potentially fatal car accident in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.”
According to the release, emergency crews had to extricate the Colóns from the wreckage and transport them to a local hospital. The wife, Julia Colon Craig, was treated and released from Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head, North Carolina, after suffering various lacerations and bruises.
However, Colon’s condition required transport to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, a level 1 trauma center in Virginia, as he bore the brunt of the serious accident.
The injuries sustained by Willie Colon include concussion, scalp lacerations that required 16 staples for suturing, and fracture to his C1 cervical vertebra.
According to the published information, Willie Colón “is in serious but stable condition”, and will be transported as soon as possible to New York Presbyterian Hospital, to be treated by his usual medical team.
The statement also notes that no other vehicles were involved in the accident and that no further information is available at this time.
