Over half a million Ukrainians have fled their country to neighboring nations due to the Russian invasion, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said today on his official Twitter account.
The UN Refugee Agency headed by Grandi previously pointed out that Poland, Hungary, Moldova, Slovakia, and Romania are for the moment the main recipients of that flow of refugees.
Grandi himself called since the beginning of the attack for countries neighboring Ukraine to “keep their borders open to those seeking safety and protection.”
Both UNHCR and the Ukrainian government warned in previous days that up to five million people, almost a tenth of the national population, could leave Ukraine due to the war.
UNHCR UK spokeswoman Laura Padoan said today on her Twitter account that the UN agency is verifying reports of Ukrainians being prevented from boarding trains as they flee the Russian offensive.
According to the Ukrainian government, there have been 1.5 million internally displaced persons in the country since the beginning of the Crimea and Donbas crisis in 2014.
