Over 2,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed since the beginning of the invasion launched by Russia on February 24, the Ukrainian State Emergency Service (DSNS) said Wednesday.

“During the seven days of the war, Russia has destroyed hundreds of transport infrastructure, housing, hospitals, and kindergartens. In this time, more than 2,000 Ukrainians have died, not counting our defenders,” the DSNS noted on its Facebook page.

In a statement, it stresses that its rescuers have managed to save the lives of more than 150 people, evacuate 500 others, and put out more than 400 fires caused by Russian shelling.

According to the DSNS, its bomb squad has so far defused a total of 416 explosive devices.

In the course of all these missions, 10 rescuers have been killed and 13 others injured.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry reported that fighting continues today for Mariupol, a city of almost half a million inhabitants in the southeast of the country, bathed by the Sea of Azov and controlled by the Kyiv government.

“The units of the National Guard of Ukraine together with the Armed Forces of Ukraine maintain the defense of the city,” Interior said in a statement posted on its Facebook account.
