Putin’s four demands for the war with Ukraine
According to a statement by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Putin also demands that Zelensky’s government recognize Crimea as Russian territory, as well as decree independent states to those areas taken by Russia such as Donetsk and Luhansk.
The official told Reuters that Russia had told Ukraine that it is ready to stop its military action “in a moment” if Kyiv complied with its conditions.
Peskov said Ukraine was aware of the conditions. “And they were told that all this can be stopped in a moment,” he said.
“We really are finishing the demilitarization of Ukraine. We will finish it. But the main thing is that Ukraine ceases its military action. They should stop their military action and then no one will shoot,” he told Reuters.
“They should make amendments to the constitution according to which Ukraine would reject any aims to enter any bloc. We have also talked about how they should recognize that Crimea is Russian territory and that they should recognize that Donetsk and Lugansk are independent states. And that’s about it. It will stop in a moment,” he added.
Last Monday, February 28, Putin had told Emmanuel Macron that neutrality, demilitarization of Ukraine, and recognition of Crimea as Russian territory are key to ending the war.
Russia’s requests prove impossible to fulfill, as demilitarizing Ukraine would put it in an even more vulnerable situation to invasions such as the one Putin has already initiated.
The Russian president had previously asked Ukraine to assume a neutral position and not to insist on joining NATO as a “threat.”
