The alleged perpetrator of the April 12 New York City subway station shooting, identified as Frank James, pleaded not guilty to all charges Friday.
James appeared in federal court in New York on charges of committing a terrorist attack on a means of transportation and discharging a firearm during a violent assault in which 10 people were shot and wounded.
The suspect is awaiting trial at the Metropolitan Detention Center in New York’s Sunset Park neighborhood.
He was indicted on May 8 by a federal grand jury on charges of terrorism.
James, 62, was also charged with the crime of discharging a firearm during a violent crime for the 33 shots he fired in a subway car.
If James is convicted on the most serious charge, the terrorist attack, he could be sentenced to life in prison, while the other charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison and a minimum of 10 years.
The attacker threw two smoke bombs and began firing indiscriminately at the occupants of a subway car passing through Brooklyn during the morning commuter rush hour.
The attack wreaked havoc and paralyzed the subway system in the city for several hours.
James was arrested a day after the attack and has remained in police custody ever since, after a short hearing before a judge in which he was denied bail.
The defendant had a YouTube channel on which he spread conspiracy theories and racial hatred of whites and had been arrested nine times in New York between 1992 and 1998 and three times in neighboring New Jersey.
