In the pleadings phase of the trial, the Prosecutor’s Office in Argentina said on Monday that Cristina Fernández — the former president (2007-2015) and current Vice President — and late husband Néstor Kirchner — the former president (2003-2007) — created “one of the most extraordinary matrices of corruption” during their tenure.
Prosecutor Diego Luciani said that his office is confident that between 2003 and 2015, former prosecutors acted irregularly, often linking with other government officials in a “pyramidal” scheme.
The allegations were presented in a virtual hearing before a local criminal court, in which the leader of Kirchnerism was present.
The prosecutors claim they have uncovered that the late Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner “installed and maintained within the national and provincial administration of Santa Cruz one of the most extraordinary matrices of corruption that, unfortunately, and sadly, has been developed in the country”.
Fernández is being prosecuted for the alleged crime of illicit association and fraud to the detriment of the public administration.
The trial began on May 21, 2019 (a few days after Cristina Fernández announced her alliance with Alberto Fernández for the October elections of that year, which they ended up winning). It now enters the final stretch as a verdict is expected before the end of 2022.
