Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon was the victim on Wednesday of an armed robbery of her vehicle in the city of Philadelphia, an incident from which she escaped unharmed, her office informed.

The Democratic Party legislator was assaulted after participating in a meeting in a park located in the south of the city.

The Philadelphia Police Department indicated in a statement to The Hill that the assailants were two men in a dark van.

The pair reportedly demanded the keys to the vehicle from the 62-year-old lawmaker.

One of them, who was armed, took the car and was followed by his accomplice who was traveling in the van.

“The congresswoman was physically unharmed,” Scanlon’s office pointed out in a statement released on Twitter.

Annie McCormick, a reporter for a local television channel, uploaded on her Twitter account a photograph of the congresswoman and indicated that the assailants took, along with the car, her government ID and cell phone.

Gay Scanlon supported defunding the police force

The congresswoman is one of the co-sponsors of the Mental Health Justice Act. At the time that bill was introduced in February 2021, it was reported that the purpose was to make it easier for state and local governments to defund the police in order to shift those resources to mental health services.
