Mitch McConnell was discharged from the hospital after being hospitalized due to a fall suffered during a dinner party. The current Senate Minority Leader received the news last Monday after recovering from the fall. During the studies, a new rib fracture was discovered, so he will have to continue his recovery for some time.

McConnell’s office came out to clarify the situation through a statement. “Leader McConnell’s concussion recovery is proceeding well and the Leader was discharged from the hospital today,” they indicated through the communiqué, in which they also revealed that “at the advice of his physician, the next step will be a period of physical therapy at an inpatient rehabilitation facility before he returns home.”

The 81-year-old senator was hospitalized due to a fall during a Senate Leadership Fund dinner held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Washington DC. Regarding the newly discovered injury, his office indicated that “Over the course of treatment this weekend, the Leader’s medical team discovered that he also suffered a minor rib fracture on Wednesday, for which he is also being treated.”

“The Leader and Secretary Chao are deeply thankful for the skilled medical care, prayers, and kindness they have received,” the missive added.

Now 81, McConnell is a polio survivor and has had problems with balance. For example, in 2019 he suffered a broken shoulder after tripping in his Kentucky home.

“I think it’s under-appreciated outside the public health community just how much hard work and innovation has to continue after a disease has dropped off the front pages,” he recalled in a Roll Call report on the polio he suffered as a child. He also warned that, without continued support, “progress could erode quickly.”

The Kentucky senator first came to the Senate in 1985 and assumed leadership of the Republican Conference in 2007. Since then, he served two terms as minority leader, from 2007 to 2015 and from 2021 to the present. In addition, he served as majority leader during the final years of Barack Obama and the entire Donald Trump administration.
