A bill that would give green card or work permit holders the ability to vote in New York City elections has passed its final legislative stage, which will allow it to be voted on December 9.
The Municipal Voting Rights Bill, authored by Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez, achieved the consensus of the City Council, the Mayor’s office and the Immigrant Coalition.
If passed, New York would join twelve municipalities across the country that already allow permanent residents to vote in certain types of municipal elections.
Rodriguez stated that on December 9, “New York City Council will make history.”
