Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed HB 5, SB 1108 and HB 233 into law on Tuesday, which aims to teach about the evils of communism and totalitarian ideologies. It also promotes civics instruction and education in public schools, from kindergarten through higher education.
“’m proud to sign three bills today that prioritize civics education in our schools,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Florida students will learn about the patriots who come to America after fleeing communist regimes.”
Senator Ana María Rodríguez (R-FL) explained the importance of this project for families who managed to flee communism: “As the daughter and granddaughter of Cuban refugees, my family knows first-hand the dangers of communism and the fatal consequences of totalitarian regimes,” said Rodríguez.
House Bill 5: civics curriculum and teaching the evils of communism
House Bill 5 requires the Florida Department of Education to create an integrated K-12 civics education curriculum that includes an understanding of the shared rights and responsibilities of citizens under the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
The governor’s office detailed that the plan expands required high school instruction to include a comparative discussion of political ideologies that conflict with the principles of liberty and democracy essential to the founding principles of the United States, such as communism and totalitarianism.
