Russia’s lower house, also known as the DUMA, on Thursday passed a bill banning propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations, pedophilia and gender reassignment in the media, Internet, advertising, literature and cinema.

The legislation provides for fines of up to 10 million rubles ($165,200) for violating the law. “Promotion of non-traditional sexual relations is prohibited. Any propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations will be punished. A ban on the promotion of pedophilia and sex change has also been introduced. Fines will amount to up to 10 million rubles,” the Duma said in a statement obtained by the EFE news agency.

The bill will now go to the Upper House, the Federation Council and then to President Vladimir Putin, whose signature will confirm its entry into force. In 2020, Russia explicitly banned same-sex marriages.

It did so by adopting amendments to the country’s Constitution which, among other things, stipulated that the institution of marriage is the union between a man and a woman.
