The U.S. military launched airstrikes Thursday against facilities in eastern Syria used by Iranian-backed militias.
The action was in retaliation for a rocket attack on U.S. troop locations in Iraq earlier this month. It is the first military action by Joe Biden’s administration.
“This proportionate military response was conducted in conjunction with diplomatic measures, including consultation with coalition partners,” said Pentagon chief spokesman John Kirby in announcing the strikes.
He added: “The operation sends an unmistakable message: President Biden will act to protect American and coalition personnel.”
Kirby said the U.S. airstrikes “destroyed multiple facilities at a border checkpoint used by a number of Iranian-backed militant groups.”
