PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN will travel without a delegation to the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. The decision was made because Buckingham Palace only issued invitations for the president and first lady, a source told CNN.

“Previous state funerals, such as the one for former South African president Nelson Mandela, have allowed for the sitting president to bring a delegation of officials to the event,” the media outlet detailed.

However, the White House reported that Joe Biden accepted the invitation and will travel with his wife to the state funeral, to be held on September 19 at Westminster Abbey. “The Queen’s coffin arrived Sunday at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, following a six-hour journey from Balmoral Castle to the Scottish capital,” CNN explained.

The death of Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth died last Thursday at the age of 96 and after more than 70 years as monarch. “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,” the family’s official Twitter account wrote.

Elizabeth II was head of state of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and fourteen other member states of the Commonwealth of Nations. She assumed the throne on June 2, 1953 following the death of her father. Between June 2 and June 6, 2022, the platinum jubilee commemorating Elizabeth II’s 70 years of reign was held.
