THE IGBARUKU community in Nigeria is celebrating Bitcoin because the cryptocurrency financed an entire project that brought clean water to more than 1,000 of its villagers. The work was funded by the Built With Bitcoin Foundation, whose workers educated residents about the crypto world while they were there.

For the Igbaruku, getting fresh water meant walking a few miles every day, given that, in Kogi State, water is contaminated and causes disease and various health complications.

These long distances mean that the youngest members of the family are responsible for hydration, which generally leads to a higher percentage of absences from school.

As if that were not enough, the community is so isolated that they also encounter complications in accessing electricity, banking services, and sanitation, among other necessities.

Since they began the work, the workers educated the population about cryptocurrencies and, as the name of the foundation indicates, about bitcoin in particular. The project cost $6,000 in BTC and ended in May 2022.

“At the Built With Bitcoin Foundation, we operate all around the world to provide communities with clean water, access to quality education, sustainable farming, and humanitarian support, all powered by Bitcoin,” said Yusuf Nessary, co-founder of Built With Bitcoin Foundation.

“Thanks to the donations collected at this year’s Bitcoin Conference, this community in Nigeria has a new water system to keep them hydrated and healthy—allowing them to thrive in school, work, and life,” Nessary added.

Built with Bitcoin is a foundation that has a clear objective, “Built With Bitcoin is a testament to the power of cryptocurrency.”. In addition, as they add on their own website about BTC, “we firmly believe that it can improve lives and make the world a better place.”
