According to journalist Bill Melugin, the Texas border area near Roma became a battleground with exchanges of gunfire between the U.S. and Mexico after suspected cartel members fired on a Border Patrol Special Operations Group, which returned fire.

Melugin said no American officials were injured, but these are violent events that are becoming recurrent.

In January, members of the Texas National Guard were also shot at from Mexico in the same area, and that same month Fox News was an eyewitness to gunfire by cartel members on U.S. soil.

“Heavily armed groups are becoming a more common sight along the Texas-Mexico border, authorities said. Last month, Texas Department of Public Safety officials told Fox News that suspected cartel members involved in human smuggling were wearing tactical gear and armed with AK-47s while taunting National Guard soldiers across the Rio Grande,” the outlet said.

Border Patrol agents frustrated and with their hands tied

Border Patrol agents have stated that they feel frustrated and their hands are tied in the face of the unstoppable immigration crisis. They also criticize Joe Biden’s administration for not issuing statements in response to rising crime and violence.

“What’s odd is there is no statement from our government telling Mexico to get that sh*t under control.  Imagine if U.S. citizens were shooting at Mexican Police.” said one agent, according to journalist Julio Rosas, a Town Hall correspondent.

“Not only do agents feel like they’re not getting support for the overwhelming illegal border crossings, but also for very serious situations like cross-border shootings,” Rosas said.

Rosas revealed an audio in which Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas acknowledges the severity of the immigration crisis as Border Patrol officials rebuked him for the situation.

“The job has not gotten any easier over the last few months and it was very, very difficult throughout 2021. I know apprehending families and kids is not what you signed up to do. And now we got a composition that is changing even more with Cubans, Venezuelans, Nicaraguans, and the like, it just gets more difficult,” Mayorkas said in the recording.

“An agent pressed Mayorkas on how DHS can reconcile saying border security is the main mission for Border Patrol, yet agents are unable to patrol the border due to the policies the Biden administration has in place,” Rosas recounted.

“Mayorkas said he appreciated ‘the candor’ and explained that he is working to ensure agents have the staffing, funding and equipment they need to do their jobs,” the article noted.

In the first three months of FY 2022 alone, there have been 518,370 arrests, which is more than double the first three months of FY 2021, when the number was 218,306.
