CHILE‘s socialist president, Gabriel Boric, pledged this Sunday to promote a new constituent process with the Congress and to work to speed it up, after Chileans voted massively against the proposal to change the Constitution promoted by his government.

“I pledge to do my utmost to build, together with Congress and civil society, a new constituent itinerary (…) Chilean men and women have demanded a new opportunity to meet and we must be up to this call”, he emphasized.

The president emphasized “two messages” that Chileans have delivered this Sunday: on the one hand, that Chile “wants and values its democracy” and, on the other hand, that “it was not satisfied with the proposed Constitution”.

In view of this decision, Boric confirmed that he summoned the presidents of the Congress and representatives of the civil society this Monday in the palace of La Moneda (seat of Government) to advance on the new path.

“We will carry out a round of conversations to gather the proposals of the different sectors that have committed to the country to establish a new Constituent Process”, he said.

The President indicated that he has already spoken with some of the actors and said that “beyond the legitimate differences”, he knows that “the will for dialogue and meeting prevails”.

By an overwhelming 61.8% against 38.1%, Chileans rejected this Sunday the proposal for a new Constitution drafted by a leftist majority convention, after the wave of violent protests in 2019 in which they set fire to several cities and destroyed more than 70 subway stations in the Chilean capital.

The “Rejection” to the new text was imposed in the 16 regions of the country, including the Metropolitan – which houses the capital – and the coastal Valparaiso, where it won against all odds with 55.4% and 57.6%, respectively.

Despite this, the president has pledged to push for a new attempt to change the current constitution.
