Congress on Friday averted a government shutdown just hours before the midnight expiration of funds that allow the government to continue operating.
The House of Representatives, under Democratic control, finalized the parliamentary process of this short-term spending bill with its approval by 230 in favor and 201 against. The Senate, where the progressives have a slim majority, had given its approval on Thursday by 72 affirmative votes and 25 negative votes.
Neither Republicans nor Democrats were interested in a government shutdown just over a month before the November 8 legislative elections, and their bipartisan agreement leaves this legislative measure pending only ratification by President Joe Biden to go into effect.
