John Fetterman, the Democrat candidate for the Pennsylvania Senate, recently made headlines for an old video that doesn’t make him look good. Dated December 2021, the current lieutenant governor said in an interview that he opposes voter ID because “the poor and people of color are less likely to have their ID at any one given time.”

On that occasion, the Democrat spoke with Brian Tyler Cohen and confessed his concern about an initiative to approve voter ID in the state.

“In my own state, they are going to pass, attempt to pass a constitutional amendment making sure that universal voting ID for every time you vote, not just when you sign up to vote, but every time you vote,” Fetterman commented.

The controversial comment came right after when he asserted that Republicans were seeking to pass such legislation “Because they understand that at any given time, there’s tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians who typically are on the poorer side and are people of color that are less likely to have their ID at any one given time.”

Criticism was immediate, and one of them came from Matt Walsh, a popular conservative commentator.

“If you’re an adult in modern society, you must have some kind of photo ID because you can’t do anything without it,” said Walsh. “You can’t rent an apartment. You certainly can’t buy a house. You can’t get a credit card —you can’t do anything,” expressed the protagonist of the documentary “What is a Woman.”

In addition, regarding the notion that people of color cannot get a photo ID, Walsh added that he finds it “hard to think of something more degrading, insulting, and paternalistic than that.”

Ted Cruz also joined the attacks and used his Twitter account to comment on Fetterman’s remarks: “a completely racist comment. Sadly, it’s unsurprising from Democrat John Fetterman— the same guy who pulled a shotgun on an unarmed and innocent black jogger,” the Texas senator wrote.

The Democrat will face Mehmet Oz in the November election, seeking to wrest the seat that Pat Toomey will vacate from the Republicans. While leading in the polls, a health problem has prevented Fetterman from campaigning usually.
