According to official results, Governor Greg Abbott defeated Beto O’Rourke in Texas, thus winning the right to a third term. With more than 95% of the votes counted, the Republican’s lead surpassed 11 percentage points. The Democrat’s defeat would mark a negative streak of three lost elections.

The result would be in line with the polls, which ended with an average double-digit lead for the former state attorney general. Despite O’Rourke’s attempts to associate Abbott’s image with mass shootings, Texas citizens backed the Republican by a wide margin.

The Republican’s message was simple: don’t let Texas become California. In both speeches and in the debate, the governor emphasized that Texas remains a place to grow up and raise a family.

“In Texas, anything is possible. But to build a better future for every Texan, I need your help. Together, we will make sure that Texas remains the best state to live, work, and raise a family. We will secure the future of Texas,” states the campaign’s own website.

This defeat would be the third in a row for O’Rourke, who lost to Ted Cruz in 2018, lost the Democratic nomination for President in 2020, and would now fall short in his bid to unseat Greg Abbott.
