The U.S. Attorney’s Office charged David G. Jakubonis, attacker of Republican Congressman Lee Zeldin and also a candidate for governor of New York, with assault on a lawmaker with a dangerous weapon, for which he could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.
The assailant confronted Zeldin last Thursday during a campaign rally near the city of Rochester (New York) when he was arrested and released on bail ruled by a state judge.
The New York gubernatorial candidate had already warned that it was very likely that his attacker would not face charges under state authorities. Indeed, he was released just hours later.
A struggle ensued between the two until several of the people present intervened, after which the assailant threw the congressman while shouting, “You’re done.”
Zeldin is the Republican candidate in the New York gubernatorial election next November, in which the favorite is incumbent Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat.
