Candidate Geoff Diehl, supported by former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), won Tuesday’s Republican Party primary for next November’s Massachusetts state gubernatorial election.

This year’s Republican primaries have become a thermometer to measure the influence of Trump, who remains the most visible face of the party but has not yet announced whether he will repeat as a presidential hopeful in 2024.

According to projections, Diehl prevailed with about 56% of the vote compared to 43% garnered by Chris Doughty.

The Trump-backed candidate opposes restrictions because of the covid-19 pandemic and celebrated the Supreme Court ruling last June that struck down abortion at the federal level.

Diehl will face Maura Healey, Tuesday’s winner of the Democratic primary, next November.

Massachusetts has been governed since 2015 by Republican Charlie Baker.

President Joe Biden, however, won in this east coast state the 2020 election against Trump.

Both Biden and Trump have been personally involved in the November 8 midterm elections, when the House of Representatives, a third of the Senate, and several state offices will be renewed.
