Less than a year ago, Glenn Youngkin surprisingly reversed an 11-point deficit in the polls to become the new Republican governor of Virginia. To achieve this, the former businessman built his campaign on one issue in particular: education. Days ago, he sat down in CNN studios to defend his education agenda, focused on empowering parents.

During the 2021 gubernatorial campaign, Youngkin provoked an unforced blunder from opponent Terry McCauliffe. While debating in September, the Democrat slipped the following sentence: “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.” Since then, his opponent’s campaign put schools center stage and pulled off an improbable victory that surprised everyone.

Days ago, the Republican spoke with Jake Tapper on the “State of the Union” program and justified his administration’s actions in education.

“Parents have a fundamental right to be engaged in their children’s lives. Children don’t belong to the state. They belong to families. And so, in these most important decisions, step one has to be to engage parents, not to the exclusion of a trusted teacher or an adviser, but to make sure that parents are involved in their children’s lives,” the governor began.

Regarding changes in children’s pronouns, Youngkin stated that “If parents actually want their child to be able to change a pronoun or their name or use a bathroom, if parents choose that, then, legally, that’s what the schools will do.”

However, the former businessman made it clear that he would keep biological men out of women’s sports, since it is “unfair.”

Youngkin pointed out that “common sense” is perhaps the flywheel with which the administration intends to manage state policy. The current governor’s education agenda replaced the Model 2021 Policies promoted by Ralph Northam (D) with the new Model 2022 Policies.
