Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb has arrived in Taiwan for a four-day visit where he will meet with the island’s president and representatives of the semiconductor industry, local media reported.

Holcomb —who arrived Sunday night in Taipei— is the first U.S. governor to travel to Taiwan since the start of the covid-19 pandemic, the official Taiwanese news agency CNA reported.

The Taiwanese Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the U.S. representative will also sign a memorandum of understanding with the self-ruled island to facilitate bilateral trade and scientific cooperation.

The visit comes just weeks after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a fleeting visit to Taiwan that infuriated China and triggered tensions between Washington and Beijing.

In response to her trip, China imposed sanctions on Pelosi, suspended dialogue with the US in several important areas, and deployed military maneuvers of an intensity not seen in decades in the Taiwan Strait.

Last week, Beijing also announced sanctions against Lithuania’s Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications, Agne Vaiciukeviciute, and suspended exchanges and cooperation in these areas after she traveled to Taiwan.
