John Kerry and Emmanuel Macron Get Close to Venezuela’s Dictator

Leer en Español

Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro is still trying to reestablish and stabilize his relationship with the international community, which does not recognize him as president and has called for the end of his regime. Therefore, he traveled this week to the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27), which is being held in Egypt.

On Tuesday, a video was published in which Maduro met and greeted the U.S. Special Presidential Climate Envoy, John Kerry. During the brief conversation there is an exchange of words and laughter from both of them.

The images show Kerry getting up from his chair and reciprocating Maduro’s greeting. In the video, published by AP journalist Joshua Goodman, you can hear Maduro say: “How are you?”

After a few words, the former U.S. Secretary of State -during Barack Obama’s second presidential term- told Maduro: “I also promised to go to see you, but in the end things didn’t work out”.

Kerry is not the first to shake hands with the dictator, accused of human rights violations and facing an investigation by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity. This Monday, Maduro also had a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.

The minute-and-a-half-long, smile-laden exchange took place in the corridors of the Sharm El-Sheikh climate change conference in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt (COP27). “I will be delighted that we can talk longer, that we can undertake useful bilateral work for the region,” Macron told Maduro.
