North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un has said his country will never give up nuclear weapons or give in to sanctions imposed by the international community over its weapons development, state media reported today.

Kim made the remarks in a speech at the recently opened session of his Supreme National Assembly, North Korea’s legislative body, this week.

In his appearance, Kim accused the U.S. of setting itself the goal of overthrowing the North Korean regime by making it give up its nuclear power and self-defense rights, according to the speech reported by the KCNA news agency.

The North Korean leader also said Washington seeks to pressure Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons through sanctions imposed on the country but assured that the North would never do so, even “in hundreds of years” of sanctions.

Kim was addressing the participants of the Supreme National Assembly during the body’s current cycle of sessions, which kicked off Wednesday and will continue for an undetermined number of days, as is customary in the secretive territory.

North Korea has kept its borders closed since the outbreak of the covid-19 pandemic in early 2020 and has rejected offers of dialogue raised since then by Seoul and Washington.

Last year, the North Korean regime approved a five-year weapons modernization plan that has resulted in some 20 missile launches and appears to be behind preparations for a new nuclear test detected by satellite images.

If it takes place, it would be the first atomic test by Pyongyang in five years, and according to South Korean and U.S. intelligence, it has been ready for months to be carried out.
