Leer en Español

Hurricane Ian continues to make headlines following its landfall in Florida. Carmine Marceno, Lee County Sheriff, assured that the deaths caused by the hurricane can be counted in hundreds. However, he stressed that he does not have an exact number.

“While I don’t have confirmed numbers I definitely know the fatalities are in the hundreds. There are thousands of people that are waiting to be rescued and, again, I cannot give a true assessment until we’re actually on scene assessing each scene, and we can’t access people,” Marceno told ABC.

Marceno explained that the authorities are still working to address the situation after the natural phenomenon. He assured that the agents have responded to emergency calls from citizens.

“We’re doing everything that we possibly can. Now it’s to protect and preserve lives, and we are in full force doing that,” he maintained.

The passing of Ian

This Thursday it was announced that Hurricane Ian lost strength and is now a tropical storm after its passage through Florida. During the week, the natural phenomenon caused destruction in Cuba and southwest Florida.

However, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned that Ian will produce high winds and heavy rains. As well as storm surges in areas of the east coast of Florida and Georgia.
