Renowned Dr. Anthony Fauci is in the middle of the controversy after he modified the numbers that the United States needs to achieve collective immunity from coronavirus; a situation that generated great criticism to the point of labeling him as a “liar”.
Republican Senator Marco Rubio published an article on Fox News in which he claimed that Fauci lied about the coronavirus in order to manipulate the behavior of Americans.
Fauci and other U.S. scientists had claimed that 60 to 70 percent of the nation would need a vaccine to achieve mass immunity and make the coronavirus not a problem; now the doctor claimed that 75 to 90 percent of the population would have to be vaccinated for that to happen.
Fauci “refused to be frank because he felt the country was not ready to listen to him. Only now did he say that he felt he had the freedom to push this a little bit without discouraging the nation,” Rubio criticized.
“I’m sure Dr. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, made the decision to cheat with nothing but good intentions. However, let’s be clear about what he was doing: lying to the American people to manipulate their behavior,” reiterated the Republican in his published article.
The senator criticized Fauci’s decision to hide real figures instead of speaking frankly to Americans. Rubio said that the United States has the right to know the truth and based on that make their own decisions.
“People should be trusted to make these decisions for themselves armed with facts presented honestly by public officials. And when it comes to making decisions as a community, elected officials at all levels of government must lead,” he said.
“I don’t question Dr. Fauci’s motives, I trust them to be noble, but I am appalled by his arrogance. If he wants to lead the nation, he should run for office. Otherwise, he should give us an honest and transparent reading of the science, not polling data, and let the rest of us, the policy makers and the American people who elected them, do our jobs,” the senator said.
Fauci: “the coronavirus is out of control”
Fauci, the White House’s chief epidemiologist, acknowledged this Tuesday, December 29th, that the pandemic is out of control in the United States and assured that January will be even more difficult than December in terms of infections and deaths.
The expert added that the United States has not been able to alter the course of the pandemic or flatten the contagion curve.
On December 2ndM, Fauci had said that for the United States to return to normal in 2021, 75 to 85 percent of the population would have to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
According to Fauci, places like Broadway will shine again in the early fall of next year. He said that if people get vaccinated in the spring as planned, New Yorkers and the entire country could return to normal. However, the doctor already pointed out that January will be even worse than December.
“I think we have to assume it’s going to get worse, you know, we’re at 100,000 – 200,000 infections a day. There was a period in the worst part of December, when it was above 200,000; which I hope we will not reach again because it makes us stagger: you have cases, you have hospitalizations and, consequently, deaths,” he indicated.
According to data from the Johns Hopkins University, this Tuesday the United States had almost 19,335,000 infections, with more than 335,000 deaths. This means that almost 6% of the country’s population has contracted the coronavirus since February.
