THE NEW leader of the Conservative Party and next Prime Minister of the UK, Liz Truss, promised Monday to govern as a conservative and fulfill its commitment to lower taxes, solve the energy crisis, and fix public health, after winning in the primaries of his party to former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak.

Graham Brady, chairman of the influential 1922 Committee, which brings together Conservative MPs without portfolio, announced at an event held today that Truss won 81,326 votes among members (57%) while Sunak received 60,399 supports (43%), so that the Foreign Minister becomes the new leader of the formation and tomorrow will assume the head of government.

Truss had words of appreciation for her predecessor, the resigned Boris Johnson, whom she called a “friend”.

With the clear slogan, which she repeated on several occasions throughout her speech, to “deliver” on her promises, the new Conservative leader said she will unveil a bold plan to lower taxes and grow the economy.

She also pledged to deliver results against the energy crisis by dealing with people’s bills, but also with long-term problems with supply.

And she closed her remarks by guaranteeing that she will lead the Conservative Party to a major victory in the general election scheduled for 2024.

Truss will replace Johnson as head of the Executive on Tuesday, once she is received by Elizabeth II at Balmoral Castle (Scotland), where the 96-year-old Queen is spending her vacations.

After this constitutional act of rigor, the new Prime Minister will travel to London to appoint the members of her Executive at the official residence of 10 Downing Street.
