President Joe Biden’s speech attacking supporters of former President Donald Trump was divisive, most Americans agree. That’s what a Harvard CAPS-Harris poll shared exclusively with The Hill shows.

“Sixty percent of respondents said Biden’s speech divided the country and held it back, while 40 percent said the speech united the nation and moved it forward. Another 56 percent opposed the address, while 44 percent said they supported it,” the poll explained.

Mark Penn, co-director of the Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll, said the speech has generated a negative response among citizens. “While it pleased Democrats and even may have energized them, most voters saw the speech as inappropriate,” Penn noted.

The Hill added that the poll was conducted Sept. 7-8 and involved 1,885 registered voters. It was a collaboration of Harvard University’s Center for American Political Studies and Harris Poll.

Biden’s speech

The results were released after Joe Biden gave a speech in which he divided American society. Two weeks ago, he assured that the opposition to his government is a danger to democracy after calling members of the GOP and followers of former President Trump semi-fascists.

“Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the foundations of our Republic,” Biden said emphatically.
