Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was convicted Tuesday of drunk driving last May when he was involved in a traffic accident, for which he pleaded guilty in a California court.

According to local media, Pelosi changed his defense strategy (after pleading not guilty in the same case on August 3) in order to get a lesser sentence.

The husband of the House Speaker will have to serve eight hours of community service and pay a fine of US$5,000 to compensate for the damages caused to the driver of the vehicle he crashed into, as well as another US$2,000 to the court.

The judge in the case sentenced Pelosi to five days in jail, which he will not have to serve, as the hours he spent in jail after the accident were discounted and because the judge considered that he has had good behavior.

Nor was his driver’s license withdrawn, although for a year the husband of the Democratic politician will have to use a device that forces him to submit to a breathalyzer as soon as he starts the engine of his car, according to The New York Times.

The accident occurred last May 28 in Oakville (California), when Paul Pelosi was on his way to his home in Napa Valley after attending a dinner party. On a curve he collided with an off-road car.
