House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will travel this Saturday to Armenia, which this week became embroiled in a series of border clashes with Azerbaijan that have cost the lives of at least two hundred soldiers.

Pelosi said the visit was already planned in advance and follows an invitation made some time ago, she said in Berlin, where she is attending a meeting of the presidents of the parliaments of the group of seven world powers, the G7, of which Germany holds the rotating presidency.

She reiterated that, as President Joe Biden acknowledged last year, “what happened more than a hundred years ago is genocide” and explained that she will be accompanied by two Armenian Americans involved in the campaign that succeeded in making official the declaration on the extermination of Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire.

In the United States and, in particular, in the state of California, there are many citizens of Armenian origin to the point that they are more than a diaspora, they are part of the population, Pelosi said.

The House Speaker noted that Armenians face many human rights challenges, but made no reference to the hostilities with Azerbaijan —the worst in two years— or to the cease-fire proclaimed on Wednesday.
