Police continued on Monday to search for the man who fired a gun on Saturday at a mall in Aventura, about 20 miles north of Miami, wounding three people and setting off a stampede in which two more people were injured by falls and blows.
Several people were arrested after an altercation broke out outside one of the stores in the center between two groups for undetermined reasons that ended with shots fired by one of the participants.
“One of the people pulled out a gun and another followed suit, but also fired,” said a police spokesman, who has not provided details about the perpetrator of the shooting, except that he remains unaccounted for.
The three people shot were taken to hospital, but are not in danger, police sources said.
The shooting unleashed chaos at the mall, which was crowded with people shopping for gifts for Mother’s Day, which was celebrated in the United States on Sunday, May 9.
People began to run in haste in search of the nearest exit or a safe place.
Some people took the time to capture the chaotic scenes with their camera phones and posted them on social networks.
The police have requested the collaboration of citizens to find the perpetrator of the shooting and have set up a special telephone number to provide information.
The Aventura Mall closed after the incident, but opened its doors on Sunday at the usual hours.
