In the last few hours, a piece of news shook the Republican caucus in the Senate. Ben Sasse of Nebraska, one of the few Republicans who voted in favor of the last impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, will resign his seat next year to accept the presidency of the University of Florida.

The news came as a shock and a special election has already been opened in 2024 for the citizens of Nebraska to elect the person who will finish the term of the current legislator. For the time being, Governor Pete Ricketts will have the task of appointing a replacement until such elections take place.

However, it is rumored that Ricketts himself could fill Sasse’s seat, given that he sought to enter the Upper House in 2006 and that in 2023 he finishes his term as governor.

Saeese, a former Midland University president and senator since 2014, weighed in on Twitter and said he and his wife have been “pursued by wonderful institutions the past two years, but we’ve resisted being a finalist. This time is different because the University of Florida is different: I think Florida is the most interesting university in America right now.”

Senator Ben Sasse’s record

The incumbent senator is a consistent conservative vote. He opposed Biden’s major initiatives in Congress and only voted with the president 31% of the time on issues such as increasing local semiconductor production or expanding health care eligibility for veterans exposed to toxic substances.

However, Sasse joined six other Republicans who voted in favor of the latest impeachment of former President Trump and also, he established a commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

In addition, he was one of Trump’s main critics since he sought the Republican nomination in 2015 and throughout his presidency. Despite their differences, Sasse voted with the former president 84.8% of the time.
