On Friday, NYC Mayor Eric Adams declared a state of emergency to respond to the arrival in recent months of thousands of immigrants and asylum seekers, many of them bused in by Texas state authorities.
Adams explained that the city expects to spend at least $1 billion this year to help these people and that its shelter system is almost full, so he asked for urgent help from the federal and state governments.
According to the mayor, since last April more than 17,000 asylum seekers, mostly South Americans, have been bused to New York from the southern border.
