The New York District Attorney’s Office plans to file charges against Steve Bannon, a former adviser to former President Donald Trump.

In a statement picked up by the NBC channel, Bannon acknowledged that the New York authorities had planned to “pursue phony charges” against him and specified that this happens 60 days before the midterm election (scheduled for next November), implying that behind it there are electoral motivations.

Likewise, The Washington Post and The New York Times assured that Bannon plans to appear in court tomorrow, Thursday.

So far, the charges against the former Trump adviser, who has accounted against the Prosecutor’s Office and has described what happened as a partisan use of the criminal justice system as a political weapon, are unknown.

In February last year, the New York District Attorney’s Office opened an investigation against Trump’s former advisor for alleged fraud against donors for the border wall with Mexico, after being pardoned by Trump hours before leaving the White House.

The preemptive pardon granted to him by Trump applies to possible federal crimes, but not state crimes, so Bannon could still be charged in this case.

Last July, he was found guilty of contempt of Congress, for which he could be sentenced to up to a year in prison and fined up to $200,000.
