A teacher in Ireland was jailed for failing to use gender-neutral pronouns on a student. According to CBS, the teacher, identified as Enoch Burke, was placed on administrative leave and will undergo disciplinary proceedings at the school.

The teacher teaches German, history, politics, and debate. According to media reports, the situation allegedly arose after a student at a high school in Westmeath County said in May that he wanted to transition.

The school’s request regarding the use of pronouns

“When Burke, along with other school staff, was asked by the school’s principal to use the pronoun ‘they’ to refer to the student, Burke said that it went against his Christian beliefs,” CBS explained.

Enoch Burke’s incarceration came about because he had a court order not to visit the school where he works. “The school board met to discuss Burke’s response, commissioned a report and arranged a disciplinary meeting. On August 22, the board decided to place Burke on temporary paid administrative leave during the disciplinary process, stressing that the decision was not a disciplinary sanction,” CBS reported.
