This Monday, former President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to have documents that were seized during the raid on his Mar-a-Lago residence reviewed by a neutral expert.

The former Republican president’s lawyers stated that they are seeking “judicial assistance after an unnecessary and unprecedented raid” and added that the law “cannot be used as a weapon for political purposes”. As such, they are requesting that FBI investigators stop reviewing the documents immediately so they can be turned over to a neutral expert who can analyze them.

“Mr. Trump is also seeking a more detailed inventory of the items taken from his private club in Florida earlier this month, as well as the return of any items seized that he says weren’t within the scope of the search warrant,” The Wall Street Journal reviewed.

Trump’s decision comes after sources at the Justice Department reported that the former president reportedly had more than 300 classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. According to people related to the matter explained to The New York Times, there was an initial batch of 150 documents delivered to the National Archives in January, and others were delivered in June. These are in addition to those seized from the former president’s residence. Trump claims those documents are declassified,

A source told the NYT that the files found involve issues of interest to Americans. “The specific nature of the sensitive material that Mr. Trump took from the White House remains unclear. But the 15 boxes Mr. Trump turned over to the archives in January, nearly a year after he left office, included documents from the C.I.A., the National Security Agency and the F.B.I. spanning a variety of topics of national security interest.”

Trump demands to disclose content of documents

Last week, the former president called for the release of the information the FBI found during the raid.

“Not only will I not oppose the release of documents related to the unAmerican, unwarranted, and unnecessary raid and break-in of my home in Palm Beach, Florida, Mar-a-Lago, I am going a step further by encouraging the immediate release of those documents,” Trump said on Truth Social.
