IF THE presidential election were held today, former President Donald Trump would emerge victorious over President Joe Biden, if they were the candidates nominated by their parties, according to a recent poll.
In their most recent study, The Herris Poll and Harvard University’s Center for American Policy Studies (CAPS) found that, if the 2024 presidential election were held today, 45% of voters would choose Donald Trump, compared to 42% who would cast their vote for Joe Biden.
When polling Republican voters, the survey found that Trump is the “clear frontrunner” at 59% to win the GOP nomination for the 2024 presidential nomination. In the hypothetical case that the former president decided not to run for a second term, the favorite among Republicans would be FL Gov. Ron DeSantis, with 39%.
On the contrary, Democrats prefer Joe Biden over all potential candidates of their party. If not running for re-election, Democratic Party voters would prefer Kamala Harris.
Biden’s popularity lags far behind Trump’s. While a majority believe neither should run for president, 43% support a Trump candidacy, compared to 33% who believe Biden should seek re-election.
However, an alternative to both candidates would be preferable for the majority. Sixty percent believe a moderate independent candidate would be preferable for the U.S., while 40% would like to see Trump and Biden compete for the Oval Office.
Looking ahead to the November midterms, the survey found that Americans could cast a punitive vote against Democratic policies. Fifty-two percent of respondents answered that they will vote in the midterm elections to “send the message that Joe Biden is responsible for inflation, crime and open borders.”
Such it seems that President Biden’s aggressive speech against Trump voters is having the opposite effect than the Democratic Party is hoping for. The same study found that a large majority of Americans found the president’s speech in Philadelphia to be divisive and intended to instill terror.
