The United States will require Nicaraguans to include information from their social media in their U.S. visa application, the country’s Embassy in Nicaragua informed Sunday.

“All visa applicants completing the DS-160 (visitor visas) or DS-260 (immigrant visas) form will be required to include information about their social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.),” the U.S. diplomatic headquarters indicated on its Facebook account.

The diplomatic legation indicated that “all forms must be completed honestly and in full to avoid delays in your application process. Note: no passwords will be requested, only username”.

Nicaragua has been experiencing a socio-political crisis since 2018, which emerged with anti-government demonstrations that, according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), left at least 355 dead in the first year.

The crisis deepened with last November’s general elections, when Ortega, his wife, and vice president, Rosario Murillo, were re-elected to their posts, with seven potential rivals in prison and two in exile.

The United States was among the countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) that rejected the legitimacy of those elections, considering that they did not meet the requirements to be considered democratic.
