“Canadian truckers rule,” wrote entrepreneur Elon Musk on Twitter to lend his support to Canadian workers protesting vaccine mandates pushed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Why is Elon Musk supporting them?
The protests come after the Canadian government eliminated exemptions for truckers crossing the U.S. border. Trudeau’s team decided two weeks ago that drivers entering Canada would be required to be vaccinated.
In response, Trudeau said that the protesters are a minority that does not represent Canadian society and described the workers’ view as “unacceptable.”
Meanwhile, the government estimates that more than 90% of truck drivers in Canada are vaccinated. While only 15% do not have the full COVID-19 vaccine regimen.
Conservative leader Jason Kenney called for a pause in the mandate last week. He argued “we can’t afford to lose thousands of truckers.” He also warned that the measure is affecting the supply chain in the country.
“We are at the peak of supply chain constraints with empty shelves popping up all over the country,” Kenney said.
