Elections in Georgia began with uncertainty and, as the vote count progresses, there is one trend that stands out from other states: voting Republican governor and Democratic senator. With more than 95% of the precincts counted, Brian Kemp leads Stacey Abrams while Raphael Warnock is ahead by less than 1%, and the race might go to a runoff.
While Decision Desk already called the gubernatorial election for the Republicans, marking Kemp’s second consecutive victory over Abrams, the Senate race is still wide open.
Can Kemp help Walker cross the finish line?
With the same percentage tallied, Walker is trailing Warnock. However, as the votes are counted, the former football player has cut into the lead with which his opponent began the day. It will be vote-by-vote with a possible runoff looming.
The incumbent Democratic senator started with a gap of hundreds of thousands of votes, which has now shrunk to just about 35,000.
On the other hand, Kemp’s lead in the Georgia governor’s race has only expanded, so some Republican analysts are confident that support for the governor will be strong enough to help Walker reach the upper chamber.
