Historic Democratic Strategist Warns his Party About Abusing Abortion to Try to Win Election

A Win for Life

James Carville already has an assigned place in the history of American politics. He served as the chief strategist for Bill Clinton’s first presidential campaign in 1992 and is the author of a phrase he immortalized on a chalkboard: “It’s the economy, stupid“. Years later and, in the run-up to the 2022 midterm elections, he warned Democrats about over-exploiting abortion.

The ‘Ragin’ Cajun’ worked for numerous political campaigns abroad, since, according to him, it was more profitable and did not jeopardize his reputation within the country. In fact, he advised Eduardo Duhalde and Daniel Scioli in Argentina, Fernando Henrique Cardoso in Brazil, Juan Manuel Santos in Colombia and Jamil Mahuad Witt in Ecuador, among others.

As for the 2022 cycle, since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, Democrats have benefited from abortion to win or do well in various special elections.

However, according to Carville, abortion alone is not enough for Joe Biden to do well in the midterm elections. “A lot of these consultants think if all we do is run abortion spots that will win for us. I don’t think so,” the consultant said.

“It’s a good issue. But if you just sit there and they’re pummeling you on crime and pummeling you on the cost of living, you’ve got to be more aggressive than just yelling abortion every other word,” he added.

The strategist’s statements were reinforced by a recent Ipsos survey, which polled likely voters on the most important topics when heading to the polls.
