Wisconsin School Board Bans Use of LGBTQ and BLM Flags

Leer en Español

A Wisconsin school board banned the use of LGBTQ and BLM flags. The decision, voted on by a majority of board members, was reportedly taken because school leaders consider them political messages.

“Teachers and administration will not have political flags or religious messaging in their classroom or on their person,” Superintendent Stephen Plum said before the vote, Fox News reported.

With the decision, teachers are also prohibited from including their preferred pronouns in email signatures. “The Kettle Moraine School Board voted last Tuesday in favor of keeping a code of conduct in place that the school’s superintendent had interpreted as banning teachers from displaying political and religious messages in classrooms,” Fox News explained.

Criticism of Wisconsin School Board

Several students have criticized the school board’s policy, and believe the flags are not political messages. In fact, before the vote, some people pushed a petition on Change.org calling for the ban to be repealed and garnered at least 13,000 signatures of support.

Christine Donahoe, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin, said they will investigate the decision. “If you have a policy that says ‘nothing political,’ does that mean you can’t have a sign up that says, ‘Support our Troops’ or ‘Believe Women’ or ‘Save the Planet?’ By some people’s definitions, all of those things are political.”
